| the ethanol process is enzymatic/fermentation process - the process is very efficient and the ultimate source of the energy is sunlight since the stock is biomass. As long as the sun shines and plant grow - the energy balance for ethanol production is positive. Like all technologies - once the process goes mainstream efficiencies of scale and market forces will improve efficiency and reduce cost. On a relative footing with $60/barrel oil ethanol is a good alternative - and it is homegrown, reduces trade deficits, etc. The bigger question is whether it makes sense to convert food production to energy production and whether this is a wise use of resources. If we convert cropland from food production to energy production it may affect food costs. The issue is largely political imo. The oil sands in Canada and our western states will probably also be developed. I'm just looking forward to the day I can install a Mr. Fusion. generator in the Z ;-)
